The Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo, built in 1869, has gained a questionable reputation outside Japan as a place where both victims and criminals of war are paid homage. Ying LI depicts not only the place and its visitors but also approaches the sensitive role the shrine plays in contemporary Japan.

About Ying LI

Ying LI, born in 1963 in Guangzhou, China, made documentaries for China Central Television (CCTV) from 1984. In 1989, he went to Japan to do research in visual anthropology. In 1993, he co-founded the production company Dragon Films and has been a director ever since.
