What is required to watch the films on Watch.NipponConnection.com?

How much do the films cost?

Each film costs 6 euros. Many films include additional bonus features such as video messages from the filmmakers and trailers. We are also offering a festival pass and bundles with multiple movies.

Are there discounts?

No.

Are there any free films?

Yes. The films A TOWN AND A TALL CHIMNEY, FESTIVAL DER SCHATTEN as well as the films from NHK WORLD-JAPAN can be watched worldwide for free.

What payment methods are there?

You can pay with your credit card or with Giropay. With Giropay you can simply pay with your EC card using your PIN/TAN. Further information on Giropay can be found here: www.giropay.de

Can I buy films in advance?

Yes. The presale starts on May 22, 2021.

Do I need a Nippon Connection account to stream the films?

Yes. A Nippon Connection account is required to rent and stream films. You can create your account on Watch.NipponConnection.com/signup.html

Do I have to watch the film immediately after purchase?

After purchase, you have 5 days to start watching the film. After starting the film, you have 24 hours to watch. You can pause as often as you wish.

What happens if I rent a film just before the end of the festival?

If you rent a film on June 6, 2021, you have 5 days to start the movie. After starting the film, you have 24 hours to watch it. Ticket sales end on June 6, at 11:59 PM. However, PLEASE NOTE: Streaming ends on Friday, June 11 at 11:59 PM. (Any streaming in progress will be interrupted and stopped.)

Can I download the films?

No. We offer rental via streaming for 24 hours. It is not a download purchase.

Are there a limited number of tickets?

For individual films, only a limited number of tickets are available due to the requirements of the distributors. Please note the information for the respective films.

Are there films with age restrictions?

No. However, none of the films have been reviewed by the FSK, which decides the age ratings in Germany.

Do the films have subtitles?

All films are shown in the original Japanese version and have either English or German subtitles. A number of films do not have any dialogue. The animated film SUMIKKOGURASHI: GOOD TO BE IN THE CORNER will be screened in the original Japanese version with English subtitles as well as in a dubbed German version. Please note the information for the respective films.

Meaning of the abbreviations:
OmU = Original version with German subtitles
OmeU = Original version with English subtitles

Can I watch films in my country?

All films are available in Germany, while some films are also available in other select countries. Please note the information for the respective films. An overview of the country restrictions can be found here.

Can you watch every Festival film on Watch.NipponConnection.com?

Due to requirements of the distributors, the film TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH can only be watched on filmingo. You can purchase an access code here. Further information about filmingo can be found here. Films from NHK WORLD-JAPAN can be watched for free on the VOD platform NHK WOLRD-JAPAN. A registration is not required.

Why does my film abort?

If you are using an unstable Internet connection, you may experience dropouts.

I have rented a film, but playback does not start. What can I do?

Refresh the page in your browser and check if playback is possible afterwards. Check if your browser is up-to-date and install the latest version if necessary. Is it possible to watch films on my TV?

Yes, via Chromecast and Airplay all films are available to stream on your TV. For detailed information on how Chromecast and Airplay are working please check the FAQs

Why do my email address and name appear on the edge of the image?

To protect the filmmakers and to avoid piracy, we use a watermark when streaming, which cannot be hidden.

How can I vote for a film?

Three audience awards will be presented at the festival: Nippon Cinema Award, Nippon Visions Audience Award and Nippon Docs Award. From June 1 to June 5, 2021 you can vote by clicking on the links on the website for each film on Watch.NipponConnection.com.


What is Nippon Culture / Nippon Kids?

This year, the supporting program NIPPON CULTURE and the kids’ program NIPPON KIDS will take place entirely online. The section contains virtual workshops, online karaoke, concerts by Japanese artists, lectures, interviews, discussions and performances. To see the complete program, please click HERE.

Is the offer free of charge?

Concerts, lectures, panel discussions, interactive events and performances can be watched for free via livestream on Vimeo or Zoom. You can find the ticket prices for the paid events HERE.

How can I view the free concerts, lectures, etc.?

Concerts, lectures, panel discussions, interactive events and performances can be watched free of charge via livestream on Vimeo or Zoom.

For this you need:

  • a smartphone, tablet, laptop or stationary computer

  • Internet access

The dates of the free livestream events can be found in our Timetable. You will have to sign up in advance for some events. You can find more information on the webpages of each event.

How can I take part in a paid event?

Workshops, cooking classes, Nippon Heimkino At Home and the Kakashiza performance are subject to a fee and take place via Zoom. The ticket prices for the paid events can be found HERE.

You will need the following for participation:

  • a laptop or stationary computer
  • if necessary a webcam and microphone
  • Internet access

You can find the dates of the paid events in our Timetable. Ticktes will be available via the webpages of each event.

How can I take part in online karaoke?

Our popular karaoke party will take place online this year. You can join in via Spatial Chat. To register, click HERE.
If there are more than 50 registrations, we will draw lots for the participants and inform you in time by email.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is an online conference tool with video function, which allows you to participate in interactive workshops (“webinars”).

How does a workshop with Zoom work?

  1. Select a workshop from the program and click on the ticket button.

  2. Now you can register for the workshop and pay the participation fee with Paypal. You will automatically receive the access link by email, with which you can participate in the event.

  3. Just before the event starts, call up the link in your browser. If you do not have the Zoom app installed, Zoom will prompt you to download the Zoom client (for detailed instructions, see the Zoom help page).

  4. Now allow Zoom access to your microphone and webcam, and enter the virtual conference room. The workshop can begin!

Tip: To ensure the best audio and video quality, we recommend downloading the Zoom app and using it on a laptop or stationary PC rather than on a smartphone or tablet.

 

Do I have to download Zoom to my computer to participate in a workshop?

No. All you need to do is access the meeting link in your browser and allow Zoom access to your microphone and camera. However, downloading the client or the Zoom app can improve the video quality.

Does Zoom cost anything?

No, the use of Zoom is free of charge.
A participation fee may only be charged for the event.

I cannot hear anything and I am not heard. What can I do?

If you use Zoom via the browser, it must be given access authorization for your microphone. You can change your audio settings in the browser by clicking on the small arrow to the right of the microphone symbol (“Mute/Unmute”) and then selecting “Audio settings”. Here you can select your computer speakers and your computer microphone.

If you are using Zoom via the app, be sure to select “Join with computer audio” when you enter the meeting. You can also change the source of the microphone and speakers from the audio settings. To do this, click the small arrow to the right of the microphone icon (“Mute/Unmute”).

I cannot see anything and I am not seen. What can I do?

If you use Zoom via the browser, it must have access authorization for your camera. You can change your camera settings in the browser by clicking on the small arrow to the left of the camera symbol and then selecting the camera on your computer.

If you use Zoom via the app, make sure to select “Join with video” when entering the meeting. You can also change the image source in the Zoom meeting itself: either by clicking the small arrow to the right of the camera icon or under “Settings” > “Video”.
