Crossing Borders

This year’s thematic focus CROSSING BORDERS is dedicated to the relationship between Japanese cinema and the wider world. While Japan highly values the preservation of its own culture, numerous examples show how Japan and the Western world are constantly moving closer together. This is particularly evident in the film industry, where Japanese cinema has inspired many Western works since the 1960s. Our thematic focus covers international co-productions, Japanese films shot abroad, and works made in Japan by international directors. In addition to contemporary films, we will also screen two historical German-Japanese coproductions: DIE TOCHTER DES SAMURAI (1937) by Arnold FANCK and DIE TÄNZERIN (1988) by Masahiro SHINODA. Several lectures and a panel discussion will accompany the film selection.

Following the festival, selected films from the thematic focus will be shown at cinemas in the Rhine-Main region. Exact dates will be announced here.

The thematic focus CROSSING BORDERS is supported by Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.
