The original title NIPPON KONCHUKI can be translated as “The Japanese Chronicles Of An Insect”. The film depicts the life of a woman from her birth in 1918 until the early 1960s, with the background of historical events and intertitles marking the stations. Tome, born out of wedlock, must fight for everything, always seeking an advantage for her and her daughter, sometimes as a labor union member, sometimes as a madam in a brothel. With a Brechtian perspective, IMAMURA takes a dedicated as well as distanced glance at Japanese history.
